5 Areas to Organize Before Holiday Guests Arrive
Here at Merry Maids®, we talk a lot about cleaning—that’s a given. As cleaning experts, we want you to have a disinfected home that allows you and your loved ones to feel comfortable and safe. Still, organizing is a task we don’t touch on very often, and we aim to change that.
During Thanksgiving, Hanukkah, Christmas, Kwanzaa, and New Year’s, your main focus is getting your home ready to welcome holiday guests (and cooking is probably mixed in somewhere). Because of this, cleaning takes priority, and organizing can fall by the wayside. But not this year.
Let our team help you get organized by detailing each room you should tackle before the annual oliday cleaning extravaganza can commence. That way, you can sit back and relax when the holidays come and go.
1. The Guest Room
When your holiday guests arrive, the guest room will be their sanctuary and completely off-limits to anyone else, including you. So, you’ll want to organize this space a few days before arrival. And we say “days before,” so you’re not organizing too far in advance only to re-clutter the area without realizing it.
To organize this room properly, you’ll want to focus on the following:
Cleaning out drawers and closets to make room for guests’ luggage and personal belongings
Removing anything from under the bed, in case they want to use it as storage
The top of dressers and nightstands to hold toiletries and knick-knacks to make them feel at home
2. Bathroom Cabinets
There are plenty of areas in the bathroom that could use your attention, like the bathtub, toilets, sink, counter, and more. But has the space under the sink gotten some much-needed organization help lately? Probably not, and that’s okay!
To organize this area, think about the following:
Easy access (for adults) to household cleaners
Restricted access from children and pets
Including door hooks and shelving to utilize unused space
Adding bins and baskets to hold hygiene and cleaning products
We have a few tips and tricks to help you get and keep this space organized all year long. Check out our blog for organizing the trickiest spaces in your home for more advice.
3. Kitchen Appliances
Your kitchen may be situated exactly as you like. However, could it be organized more efficiently to suit your needs now? It may be a good idea to consider parting ways with kitchen appliances like that adorable lazy Susan serving tray or the KitchenAid pasta roller attachment that have been sitting on your counter for ages but you haven’t used. To declutter your kitchen, bulky items you haven’t touched in over a year should find another home. We promise that once they’re gone, you won’t miss them. And you’ll have more counter space to whip up the most delicious Christmas dinner for friends and family.
4. The Junk Drawer
Organizing for the holidays doesn’t always mean a purge of noticeable yet unused items. Often, it’s about creating function and efficiency. We all have that dreaded junk draw in the kitchen or home office that serves as a catch-all for miscellaneous papers, pens, random and unidentifiable parts, etc. This drawer is a staple in most homes, but it can get a new lease on life if you take the time to organize it. Sure, your holiday guests likely won’t be going through this drawer, but it could be a place you could add larger utensils to get them off the counter or important papers to keep them from piling up.
5. The Refrigerator
Keeping your refrigerator organized does more than allow for more space to store leftovers from your holiday dinner party. Safe food storage is vital for your entire family’s health and well-being. When food starts to go bad, and you leave it longer than needed, you may create an environment conducive to germs and bacteria.
Organize your refrigerator by:
Keeping condiments in the door for easy access
Placing veggies and fruits in drawers for freshness
Putting dairy and eggs on the middle shelf
Storing meats and fish on the bottom shelf to avoid spoilage
Using the top shelf for holiday leftovers
You’ll also want to clean your refrigerator at least once a month to remove any forgotten food containers and ensure temperatures are adequate to prevent food decay.
