Home Elegance on a Budget
In a perfect world, you’d be able to update your home seasonally — revamping rooms to mock the current trends in home design. But the reality is, not many of us have the time, funds, or dedication to pull this off.
From adding plush pillows to budget-friendly accent walls, interior designers have been sharing their secrets for years and we’ve seen a number of these tricks of the trade in our clients’ homes.
So if you’re looking to update your decor without breaking the bank, here’s how you can make your home look like a space fresh out of your favorite home magazine.
Pay attention to detail.
Rather than buy a new coach or dining table, set your sights on smaller details, like crown molding. By outlining the ceiling and roof, crown molding effortlessly makes a home look complete and polished.
Especially if you choose faux wood or plastic, this is a job that can be done on almost any budget.
You can never have too many pillows.
Especially in modern homes with lots of clean lines, pillows can add a much-needed sense of softness. When searching for pillows, remember that bigger is better (and more comfortable). Stay clear of pillows size under 18-inches. Instead, opt for ones around 22 or 24 inches.
Window treatments can make or break your room.
If there’s one place you want to dedicate most of the budget towards, it’s window treatments. Not only do they need to be beautiful, but they also serve an important purpose, so splurging on heat or light-reducing inserts is never a bad idea.
If you’re in the market for curtains, stick with elegant materials, like silk, linen, or high-quality cotton. Your curtains should also contrast your overall decor, meaning if your room is full of texture and pattern, your curtains should be relatively minimalistic.
Choose your wall color last.
It’s something that scares every homeowner — choosing a paint color. While it may be tempting to choose your wall color first and decorate around it, it’s actually easier to choose a paint color that matches your decor, rather than the other way around. If you’re going for a more high-end look, we suggest sticking with neutral walls.
If you’re a big fan of color, consider adding an accent wall. From wallpaper and shiplap to paneling and paint, there’s no shortage of ways to make one wall the focal point of your home.
Even if you love the color of your walls as they are now, adding a fresh coat of the same paint is probably the least expensive way to update the look and feel of your home.
A clean home is a comfortable home.
Even the most beautiful decor can get lost under a mountain of dust and clutter. If you’re looking for a renovation-free way to enhance your home, start by donating or throwing out things you haven’t used in six or more months. Then set your sights on cleaning your new minimalist home.
Not a fan of cleaning or just find that you’re not good at it? Instead of spending time cleaning your home, you should be simply enjoying it. Merry Maids® is here to ensure that happens.
