Spring Cleaning Ideas for Mental and Physical Clutter
Springtime is here! Though there may still be snow on the ground in some parts of the country and it might not feel like the typical start to the season, we have officially entered the time traditionally associated with renewal and fresh beginnings.
Spring cleaning usually conjures images of detailed cleaning, thorough vacuuming, and copious amounts of organizing and sorting. This year, why not think of spring cleaning as a form of self-care? Just as tidying your home can often brighten your mood, organizing your thoughts may give you more energy to tackle the rest of your to-do list.
If you’re ready to clear the clutter—both physical and mental—the experienced cleaning experts at Merry Maids have some fresh ideas to help you take advantage of the renewal of springtime.
Use the Art of Feng Shui to Feel Good About Your Space
If the prospect of deep spring cleaning feels overwhelming, try taking a feng shui approach. The traditional Chinese practice calls for attracting higher energy to support you in your tasks. Before you begin, get dressed in clothes that make you feel good when you wear them—even better if they’re made of natural fibers, like cotton or linen. Take advantage of the warmer spring temperatures and open the windows to bring in fresh air and let out stagnant air. Boost the energy in the room you’re cleaning by adding a fire element. In feng shui terms, this can mean literal fire, like a candle or incense, or an item of the fire element colors red or purple. Bright lights can also bring fire element energy to a room.
Put on a playlist of music you enjoy while you work, and diffuse a happy, energizing aroma, such as citrus or peppermint. Start with a small area, and reward yourself after you finish that area with a short break. Plan to take more time than you normally would to complete your whole home to give yourself some breathing room. Ultimately, your goal should be creating spaces that make you feel good. When you approach your spring cleaning from this perspective, rather than just “eliminating dirt and clutter,” you may find more enjoyment in the journey.
Clear Mental Clutter with a Meditation Space
Physical clutter can also contribute to mental clutter—the jumbled, noisy to-do list in our brains. While spring cleaning your home can help calm some of that, meditation is a great spring cleaning for your mind. Some people set up a whole room devoted to their meditation practice and only that, but there’s no need to be that formal. As long as you can find a corner or other small space in your home where you can feel comfortable and relaxed, you can make it your meditation space.
If you’d like to create a permanent meditation area, you can set up a cushion or pillow, add some candles or an essential oil diffuser, or any other items that help you feel at peace. However, you don’t need any formal equipment or decor to meditate—just yourself and a little time.
Think you can’t meditate? Try this simple stress-relieving meditation:
Find a comfortable seated position. (You can also lie down, but you may end up falling asleep!)
Close your eyes.
Take a slow, deep breath for a count of four.
Slowly release your breath, exhaling for a count of four.
Repeat the slow inhale, but visualize the air entering your airway and moving into your lungs.
Exhale again for a count of four, visualizing the air moving out of your lungs and out of your body.
Continue this slow inhale and exhale pattern, visualizing your breath as it moves in and out.
Try this meditation for five minutes each day for a week and take note of how you feel. Can’t spare five minutes? Even closing your eyes and observing your breath for a few inhalations and exhalations can be beneficial.
